Tweener
19'
for small chamber orchestra, solo percussionist, and 8 channel electronics.
Program Note
Tweener was composed in 2009-10 based upon some materials written for percussion and electronics in 2001. The work is an extended composition for a sinfonietta-sized ensemble featuring some unusual instruments, including contrabass trombone, contrabass clarinet, and electric bass and guitar. The soloist plays a battery of instruments including a KAT mid?controller. A ?tweener? is something that is neither/nor, and is both, and more. In composing the work, it was the interstitial spaces that piqued compositional interest. The work was premiered at the ?June in Buffalo? Festival in 2010, the 35th anniversary of its founding, and the 25th anniversary of the composer?s leadership of that organization. The performers are the dedicatees: soloist Tom Kolor, and the Slee Sinfonietta.
